About the Miniature
Created in 2022, the Meerkat stands beside the First Department of Pediatrics in Budapest to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. The small bronze figure wears a backpack and looks curiously toward passersby, inviting visitors to pause and discover its story. Rather than commemorating a historical figure, the miniature gives a visible presence to children living with Type 1 diabetes and to the quiet courage found in everyday life.
Behind the Miniature
The miniature was commissioned by the Szurikáta Foundation, which supports children living with diabetes and their families. Its location beside the children's clinic reflects that mission. The name "Szurikáta" combines the Hungarian word szuri ("injection") with the meerkat, an animal admired for its vigilance and cooperative nature. Together they symbolize daily care, mutual support, and the strength of community.
