Hands that reveal.

ABOUT

A project exploring sculpture, history and human values through the language of the hand.

Budapest by Hand is an independent photographic and research project that examines public sculpture through a single detail: the hand. What begins as a gesture unfolds into sculpture, history and the values a society chooses to remember, express, believe and pursue.

Why Hands?

Public statues are often viewed from a distance. Budapest by Hand begins with a detail instead. By focusing on the hand—a gesture of remembrance, creation, faith, work, leadership or care—the project invites a closer encounter with sculpture and the stories it embodies.

Why Statues?

Statues are more than decorations in public spaces. They reveal the people, events, values and aspirations a society chooses to commemorate. Together, they form a visual record of memory, culture, belief and achievement.

Why Four Perspectives?

As the collection expanded, recurring themes emerged. Some statues preserve memory, while others celebrate artistic expression, embody devotion or reflect human endeavor. These four perspectives offer one way to explore the collection while remaining open to different interpretations.

Is This About Hands?

Not entirely.

The project uses hands as an entry point into sculpture.

A gesture reveals a person.

A person reveals a story.

A story reveals the values a society chooses to preserve.

The hand is not the destination.

It is the beginning of the conversation.

About the Project

Budapest by Hand is an independent photographic and research project created and maintained by FILETOTH.

Photography, historical research, writing, editing and website development are all produced as part of the project.

The collection grows gradually through observation, exploration and careful documentation, with an emphasis on openness, accessibility and long-term continuity.

The project contains no advertising and pursues no commercial objectives. It remains open to collaborations that contribute to a deeper understanding of public sculpture, history and cultural memory.
